Namibia means "a place of great arid plains" and lives up to this name. The northern parts of the country are grass covered savannah, but the lasting impression is one of unrelenting harshness and lack of water.

This is one of the most sparsely populated lands on earth. San hunters, Khoikhoi and European renegades fleeing justice in the Cape were some of the pioneers of the area. Restless and wild, they were free from any government control until 1884 when the country was brought under the control of the German Empire.

Second only in size to the Grand Canyon of the USA, the Fish River Canyon is 161 km long, 27 km wide and up to 549 meters deep.

The jagged ravine cuts deep into the arid land. Daytime temperatures reach 48ºC and seldom drop below 35ºC, but nights can be very cold. The canyon is the scene of one of Africa's finest hiking trails. As you descend into the depths of the canyon at its northern end, civilization is left far behind, and for the next four or five days you can experience one of the last tracts of true wilderness on the African continent.

Sossusvlei is one of Namibia's most spectacular natural wonders. It lies about 400 km northwest of the canyon in the heart of the Namib desert. It was opened to the public only in 1977 and is a great favorite of photographers and nature lovers. The huge red dunes, up to 300 metres high are the largest in the world and are an unforgettable sight at dawn or in the late afternoon sun.

The greatest experience of all however, is to see the pan filled with water. This is something that seldom occurs and photographers from all over Southern Africa will drop everything and head for Sossusvlei for a once in a lifetime picture on those rare occasions.

Although the Skeleton Coast can be said to encompass the entire coastline of Namibia, the Skeleton Coast National Park is bounded by the Kunene River in the north and the Ugab River in the south.

The early Portuguese explorers called it "the coast of hell" but it became known as the Skeleton Coast largely due to the dismal fate awaiting shipwreck survivors through the centuries.

The Kunene River forms Namibia's northern border with Angola and is Namibia's largest river.

In ancient times the Kunene emptied its contents into the Etosha Pan, much like the present day Okavango in Botswana. In former years large numbers of elephant, rhino, impala and hippo could be found here, today they have largely been hunted out, but Willem van der Riet, the first person to navigate the river in a canoe, reported that the Kunene crocodiles were the largest and most fearsome that he had ever seen.

The Kaokoland (or Kaokoveld) encompasses a vast arid area where the desert meets the sea and some of the most ancient desert on earth.

Within the region the 2586 high Brandberg mountains and plunging river gorges, such as at Tsisab where the beautiful and mysterious rock painting known as 'The White Lady of the Brandberg' can be seen. Also in the region are dinosaur footprints dating from over 150 million years ago, the worlds largest known meteorite, an ancient petrified forest and the spectacular natural sculpture known as "Finger Klip".

The 120 by 50 kilometer shallow pan at Etosha is believed to have been an inland lake fed by the Kunene River before it changed its course to reach the Atlantic Ocean.

The edges of the pan are typical Mopane woodland, and wild game abounds. Everything from the Big 5 to vast herds of antelope and wildebeest can be seen in the park. There are several lodges and tourist camps in the area catering to every taste and budget.

Kaudom game reserve is in the more remote north-eastern corner of the country bordering the Botswana border. The area is dry for most of the year but the grasslands and game flourish during the brief summer rains.

Game viewing is best during the winter months when the animals gather around the water holes. The routes are tough at any time of the year and are suitable only for 4x4 vehicles.

Extending east from Kaudom is a slender finger of land that abuts 4 neighbouring countries. The Caprivi Strip is influenced by the Kavango, Zambezi and several smaller rivers which the very essence of life for the local inhabitants.

The majestic African Fish Eagle is a familiar presence along the waterways which team with fish and bird-life.

Duisburg is an urban area in in the Federal Republic of Germany that is very important for the economy of the region. Over many years, in this area, locals profited by the land's natural resources, and mined copper, iron, tin and other metals. Today, this town generates about 50 percent of the country's hot metal and 35% of Germany's pig-iron. Utilizing pig iron and different metals, the factories in the town make big amounts of steel, and this has been going on for more than a hundred years. What would Magellan do? I was looking for the best home base to explore Portuguese Algarve, the European sunspot with its famous coastline. The Algarve boasts 155 kilometers of sandy beaches, cliffs and tall sea stacks beside the alluring Atlantic Ocean - lime green, warm and serene. But which charming seaside spot should I choose?

Google Earth

The ancient Portuguese explorers didn't have Google Earth but I did. So I went cruising along a virtual Algarve coast and discovered Praia de Gale near Albufeira. A few clicks on pictures of golden beaches with unique sand formations and I instantly knew this was the spot. I barely broke a sweat. Eat your heart out Magellan.

Next decision – where to stay? I hit on a few of Google Earth's red bed icons and Vila Joya, a boutique resort with Moorish architecture, caught my attention. Sometimes a special destination warrants distinctive accommodation. Vila Joya, with its 2 Michelin Star restaurant, award winning spa, luxury suites, and stunning sea views, called to me like a Siren.

2 Michelin Stars and 300 Sun Days

Vila Joya has put the Algarve and Portugal on the culinary map. Along with Portugal's highest ranked restaurant, every January they host the Tribute to Claudia Festival, with top chefs from around the world. They were also named 2009 World Travel Awards' Leading World Boutique Resort.

Overlooking Praia de Gale, Vila Joya sits on 3½ ha of lush aromatic gardens of palm trees, bougainvillea, and jasmine. A short path took us to the golden beach where we enjoyed the warm water even though it was October. The Algarve enjoys a microclimate with temperatures staying in the 20s C well into the fall, and 3000 hours of sunlight a year.

"300 sunny days a year is what brings people to the Algarve," says Justin Ultee of Vila Joya Resort in Abufeira. "It is an excellent place to spend your winter. It is almost sunshine guaranteed. That is pretty much why we all travel to the Algarve."

Discovering the Old World

Although we started our Portuguese exploring online, once we arrived we discovered the Algarve the old fashioned way, by exploring its historic and scenic nooks and crannies. We didn't have to go far from Albufeira to enjoy some fish and unforgettable day trips.

Not surprisingly fishing has been a way of life for millennia in the Algarve and a visit to the Sardine Dock of Portimao, the biggest fishing port on the coast, is a must. The smell of charcoal and barbecued sardines fills the air.

Not Just Another Port

Another centuries old tradition in Europe is wine. Vila Joya has a new 12,000 bottle wine cellar with Portuguese and imported wines. While the Algarve is not traditionally a wine region, we took a trip to Adega Do Cantor (Winery of the Singer) Vineyards, which has been producing quality wine for 20 years. Three quintas (Portuguese wine growing estates) supply the grapes, including Quinta Do Moinho owned by Cliff Richards, Britain's perennial pop star.

Caramel Islands

A short ferry ride from Olhao, accompanied by friendly locals, dogs and chickens, took us to the peaceful sandbar island of Armona. Here we were greeted by the delightful butterscotch fragrance of mustard plants drying in the autumn heat.

We booked a house, aptly called Refugio dos Putos (Haven for Kids), for the night. There are no cars on this secluded oasis of sandy beaches and white rolling dunes. Refugio turned out to be the most stylish house on Armona with everything we could possibly need including children's toys, iPod dock, you name it.

Armona and a collection of sandbar islands lie at the mouth of the Ria Formosa estuary. We took a motor boat tour to nearby Culatra with Steve of KT Algarve Tours. This tour company also offers kayak tours. Sleepy Culatra is the highlight, true Portuguese culture, a working fishing village. Steve was an exceptional storyteller, and touring the village we saw octopus hanging on clotheslines and were offered the sweetest tasting clams in the Algarve.

The charms of the Algarve are diverse, from rustic to lavish and from ancient to modern. You just need to take the time to become a Portuguese explorer.

Some people are actually asked by their doctor or nurse to measure their blood pressure at home for a short period of time, to find out what it is like away from the surgery. Sometimes your blood pressure is higher when taken in a clinical or medical environment, such as your doctor's surgery. This is commonly known as white coat hypertension and can be caused by feeling anxious while waiting to see the doctor, or by being in a clinical environment.

Two methods have been used most frequently for non invasive blood pressure measurement. The first method, usually used in ambulatory settings is called an auscultatory (from the Latin for listening) method, and requires the use of a stethoscope and a sphygmomanometer. In this method an inflatable cuff of appropriate size is placed around the upper arm and kept at the heart level and is attached to a mercury or aneroid manometer.

In auscultatory method the cuff is inflated manually and listening with the stethoscope to the brachial artery at the elbow, while slowly releasing the pressure in the cuff allows an experienced examiner to take a correct reading. In the second method called oscillometric method, which is frequently used in general practice and also in at home measurements; an electronic pressure sensor is fitted in the cuff to detect blood flow, instead of using the stethoscope. Most frequently in such monitors the cuff is inflated and released by an electrically operated pump and valve.

Oscillometric monitors often vary widely in accuracy, and should be checked at specified intervals and if necessary recalibrated. There are certain restrictions when, oscillometric monitors do not give correct readings, like in certain medical conditions such as arterial sclerosis, arrhythmia and also some others.

At this point your doctor may recommend you trying diuretics. The diuretics are also called water pills. The objective of diuretics is to flush excess water and sodium from the body. The lowering of excess water and sodium helps in lowering the blood pressure and with major changes in lifestyle will help in reducing blood pressure.

Hypertension also ravages blood vessels, causing small tears in the endothelium and increasing the demand for energy in countering the excessive mechanical load on the arterial vessels - this accelerates the progress of atherosclerosis. Furthermore, a stretched muscle cell accumulates more lipid than a relaxed muscle, further enhancing this metabolic and morphological change in cells and tissues. As the vessels become increasingly blocked, blood flow to the tissues becomes inadequate, and vascular complications begin to appear in vessels of the brain, heart, kidneys, and retinas of the eyes.

Some doctors or hospitals make use of sophisticated machines which can record a whole series of blood pressure readings in a 24 hour period - called twenty four hour ambulatory monitoring. Recording blood pressure this way gives a very clear picture of what your true blood pressure is doing but it may not always be required unless your blood pressure is proving very hard to control.

I once towed my BMW Z3 from NH to VA with my '94 Toyota 1/2 ton (precursor to the Tacoma).
