Wetsuit Women
Question for women age 18-25?

What would you think of me if I said I enjoy wearing rubber wetsuits and can hold my breath underwater for over 4 minutes?

I would be impressed with your lungs! Rubber wetsuits can be sexy, so that's another plus for you!

In life and also in sports, the slightest advantage can often decide the outcome of a game, race, or any other type of organized competition. Triathlon wetsuits are one of the most advantageous developments to enter the sport since the inception of triathlon, but arriving at a decision on which suit to purchase can often be a tedious process. Here are some simple guidelines about how to know which triathlon wetsuit is best for you.

The first question to ask is "Can I even where a wetsuit in my competition to begin with?" USAT puts the rules at 78 degrees Fahrenheit where anyone can where a suit, and no suits can be worn in water temperature over 85 degrees Fahrenheit. If the water is somewhere in between, competitors are welcome to where a suit but they won't be eligible for awards or prizes. So if you're swimming in warmer climates, you may want to go with a speed skin instead of a triathlon wetsuit. Speed skins provide greater hydrodynamics without added buoyancy, and some triathletes wear their speed skin for the whole race, reducing the time spent at transition points.

There are basically three types of triathlon wetsuit designs, and each one is intended for different swimmer profiles and water temperatures. Stronger swimmers require less suit, regardless of water temperature, and weaker swimmers may need more or less suit depending on conditions.

Full body wetsuits are designed for temperatures down around the 50 degrees Fahrenheit range, and they're advised for even strong swimmers when competing in colder climates. The energy you will conserve by the added warmth can be used to greater advantage throughout the race. If you are new to triathlon and are a relatively inexperienced swimmer, you may want to go with a full body suit no matter what the water temperature. Full coverage gives you greater full-body hydrodynamics, and the thinner neoprene on the arms and legs also makes it easier to cut down through the water and back up again as you swim.

Sleeveless triathlon wetsuits are the same as the full body suits, with the exception of having no covering for the arms. Many in the sport refer to this type of wetsuit as the "Farmer John" or "Farmer Jane" style suit since it resembles a pair of overalls. Sleeveless wetsuits are great for swimming in water in the 75 degrees Fahrenheit range, and are good for more confident swimmers that still need the warmth requirements. These suits are also ideal for intermediate swimmers who still need a boost when swimming in warm water. You wont get the same hydrodynamics and minimal buoyancy in the arms as you would with a full body suit, but you also won't overheat in the warmer water.

Knee length sleeveless triathlon wetsuits are more for the 75 degrees Fahrenheit and higher range, so they are a good option for intermediate swimmers that want to test their swimming ability as they gain experience. The knee length "Farmer John/Jane" wetsuit provides a great deal of buoyancy without the full hydrodynamic benefits of the full body, but with less likelihood of the wearer overheating during the swim. These suits are less restrictive and allow for a more full range of motion, but the drawback is that some triathletes experience underarm chaffing if the suit is not properly fit.

The major brands within the triathlon wetsuit industry include names like Orca, De Soto, 2XU, BlueSeventy, and Aquaman. All the brands have entry-level, mid-range, and expert type suits in men and women's variants, all in full-body, sleeveless, or knee-length versions. There are plenty of other manufacturers on the market, but buying a low quality suit may do more harm than good. Cheep or ill-fitted suits can result in greater drag, less buoyancy, and blisters, rashes, and skin cuts from thick seems and poorly positioned zippers. Brand name doesn't always mean more money, but even if it does cost more, a little extra cash now might make a huge difference later.
